The map below depicts the number of dwellings (households) that remain underserved by broadband. For the purposes here, an underserved dwelling would be one that can not receive a fixed broadband service capable of delivering a consistent 5Mbps down and 1Mbps up connection.
There are over 500,000 property parcels in Northern Ontario, classified broadly by the property type- Residential, Commercial, Seasonal, Industrial and so on. Starting in 2012, we have collected spatial coverage information by the approximately 30 Internet Service Providers who own and operate networks in Northern Ontario. These spatial coverage files were layered onto each individual property parcel returning the best level of service to each property. At an individual level, these results can be found by searching addresses on the home page at connectednorth.ca. Here these summary results are rolled up into hexagons consistent with the Federal Government’s broadband information.
Although we have broadband coverage information across all of Northern Ontario, the coverage analysis at this level cannot be displayed for aboriginal communities or “reserves” as these communities do not use a consistent property parcel.
You can click on each hexagon to reveal more detailed coverage statistics.
